Prices are £10 per hour which include fine coffee and biscuits.

A couple of new paintings recently finished.

Southwold Beachhuts and Keswick Mill Norwich.
Sorry about some distortion to paintings. Uprights and roof lines look out, this is camera. All is well in original paintings.

In the Mill picture I used a sheet of Canson board with Arches paper on top. I bought it in Paris recently. It is not available here yet. It reacted to paint really well and I will get some more when it becomes available here.

Sketch at Blakeney

Finally got out for a few hours and did this sketch from the car park looking towards Blakeney hotel. My daughter Elizabeth is holding a charity craft fair at the Forum Norwich. A donation will be made to the Norfolk Air Ambulance. I will be exhibiting a few originals and some prints and cards.
Event is on Thursday 25th Aug - Friday 26th Aug 2011. Late night shopping on 25th Aug

Well I sold some paintings at the exhibition. But and a big but, the recession definitely took its toll. People were not spending freely. I have taken a job as a Census interviewer for a month until June. I will then get out and do some plein air work, weather permitting.

Well that was a long winter. I decorated my house and my daughters house and cleared out her attic and replaced the insulation. It was a filthy disgusting job that needed doing and who better than a wintering artist.

I have booked an exhibition at the Forum, Norwich. It is on daily for 10 days from 25th April. I will be sharing the space with local photographer Tim Smith, timchasinglight.com

House renovations

I am taking time off during Jan and Feb to do some house renovations. A different type of paint brush. I shall post again in the spring.

New painting of Morston Quay, North Norfolk

1. Drawing completed on Arches 300lb Rough paper.
2. First wash, loosely painted.
3. Second wash on mud. There is always a "Oh no, I've ruined it" moment at this stage of a painting. Can I now go and rescue it?

4. Added highlights and shadows. Quite pleased with result, always a struggle!!

New Paintings

I have been quite busy with a new house commission. Also I have done 10 new drawings and studies for new paintings from ideas that I collected through the summer. I have included three new paintings in this post. They are quite bright and vibrant aimed at cheering myself up in this very cold snowy period we have been having.

I painted plein air today on Mousehold heath overlooking the City of Norwich. I painted this oil in 2 hours. I wanted to paint in watercolours but unfortunately too cold for drying and no access to any means of drying quickly i.e. hair dryer or car heater. I used a pochard box resting on my knee see photo of box and painting. The box holds 3 x 10" x 8" boards.

I am a confident watercolourist and know my way around the medium having used for over 20 years. I am the opposite with oils and only use them for sketching outdoors.
In the photos above I focused one shot on the sky and one on the foreground.

I received a commission from the painting below of The Cathedral Chapel. They wanted the music room included which is at the extreme left of the painting. The other painting is Keswick Mill, Norwich and is a comission as well. I am now clear of commissions and can start on some new ideas that I have collected over the summer.

It's been nearly a year since I started this blog. To be honest I couldn't manage to get it listed on google and I lost interest. I have managed to get a link from my website to this blog. I am currently completing a couple of commissions and then I will start publishing my daily struggles and efforts in Watercolour.

A fairly loose painting for me. I laid the whole painting in one initial wash, after the initial drawing. 300lb Arches rough paper.

Short burst of painting today and finished this picture:

Spent an hour in the garden setting traps for the latest mole. Inhumane you might say. If you walked on my lawn, it is bordering on dangerous due to the amount of tunnels they have dug down the years. I kill one and months later another one moves into the redundant tunnels.

3 mile jog with the dog pm.

Painted from 11am - 1.40pm and had 30 mins for lunch. Painted again til 4pm. Went to the gym and burnt 750 cals doing cardio and then had burger and chips!!

Below are finished watercolours. I am happy with them for the moment. I will put them away for a couple of weeks and get them out to see if there are any glaring problems.

I am watching a new dvd by Alvaro Castagnet at the moment. I thoroughly recommend him if you want to loosen up;

Today painted from 11am - 4pm with 1 hour for lunch. Worked on 2 watercolours of cley mill. Small paintings 7" x 5".
Will post finished Paintings tomorrow.
If anybody reads this |I am more than happy to discuss techniques, paper and paints used etc etc

Walked for 2 miles at 5pm with dog!!
Another day no alcohol, thats 1.5 years.
